CHRISTCHURCH
New Zealand Senior Marathon Championships, Christchurch Marathon – 11 April 2021

Daniel Jones claimed his first ever national title and Alice Mason was crowned national marathon champion for the fourth consecutive year.

In the New Zealand championships, run as part of the Christchurch Marathon, Jones won in 2:23:35 from silver medalist Andy Good 2:28:21 and bronze medalist Jonah Smith 2:29:06.

Mason won in 2:43:48, well outside the Olympic qualifying time of 2:29:30 that she was seeking. Kelly Parlane claimed silver with 2:46:06 while Ingrid Cree ran a two-minute PB of 2:53:28 to earn the bronze medal.

Mason said that she just wanted to try and run really fast.

“We set off at 2:29 pace which was probably optimistic, but I just wanted to have a go and see what happened,” said Mason.

In the men’s race, Good set the pace from the start and was two minutes clear at half way in 68m. Jones came from behind in the hot conditions and passed Good at 35km.

Jones said that it was hard work.

“I didn’t feel good at any stage, so I just concentrated on doing what I could. It was good to be able to come through in the end,” he said.

“It was awesome coming down and getting the win in front of the Christchurch crowd as this is my second home over summer, doing the coast to coast or Topsport kayaking, so to win here is a privilege,” he added.
