CHRISTCHURCH
New Zealand 100km Championship, North Hagley Park – 23 May 2021
Keith Burrows of Owairaka added the New Zealand 100km title to the New Zealand 24-hour title he won late last year. The 46-year-old won the 100km by nearly an hour in 7:43:17, run in cool 4-14c and calm conditions around the North Hagley Park.

Burrows had an impressive lead up to the 100km after finishing eighth in the Rotorua marathon, and a week later was fifth in a PB 1:13:54 in last weekend’s the Huntly half marathon.

Ben Taylor of North Canterbury was second in 8:41:46 and James Inwood of Masterton third in 9:33:40. Inwood won the silver medal in the 24-hour championship. Wayne Botha of Takapuna, third in 2019, was fourth in 9:42:35.

Jaime Stevenson of North Harbour Bays, the sole female competitor, won the New Zealand women’s 100km crown in 10:11:29.

The Sri Chinmoy 50km was won by David Grimes of Christchurch in 3:58:32, closely followed by Ryan Wood of Christchurch in 4:00:30.

Multi age-group world record breaker Val Muskett of Hampden Otago won the women’s 50km in 5:10:47 ahead of New Zealand super veteran and 24-hour age group national record holder Shirley Rolston of Port Hills Athletic, who recorded 6:54:05.

New Zealand steeplechase champion Harry Ewing was a clear winner of the senior 9km. The 23-year-old 2019 World University Games representative recorded 30:22, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of Thomas Richards. Daniel Redmond was third in 32:36.

2020 junior women’s steeplechase champion Eva Pringle won the women’s 6km in 23:42 from Anne McLeod 24:29 and Imogen Hull 25:55.

97th Vosseler Shield Mountain Races, Mt Victoria – 22 May 2021
Daniel Jones, off the back of winning the Hawke’s Bay marathon last week, easily won the senior 10km in 40:30. Nathan Tse was second in 42:01 and Ryan Hunt third in 42:51. Dan Nixon was the first master in 42:22.

Ruby Muir won the women’s 10km in 46:24, beating Ali Campbell 49:44 and Nicola Hankinson 55:26.

Will Anthony won the 5km in 19:27. Susannah Lynch won the women’s 5km in 21:45, from Esther George 23:02 and Nicole Mitchell 23:13. Mel Stevens was the first master in 24:30.

3.5km winners were Josh Jordan 13:06 and Ruby Barton 14:36, and over 1.6km George Gray 6:57 and Eva Green 7:22.

Tucson Elite Classic, Tucson AZ, 20 May: Lauren Bruce reclaimed the New Zealand national and Oceania hammer throw records with a winning throw of 74.61m, bettering Julia Ratcliffe’s record of 73.55m set in winning the national title in Hastings in March. Bruce had previously held the record of 73.47m, set in Hastings in September last year. Bruce’s series in Tucson was 70.45, 74.61, 72.02, 72.35, 67.41, F.

Tom Walsh was second in the shot put with 21.71m. His series was 21.39, 21.71, 21.54, 20.95, 21.16, 21.51. Ryan Crouser won with 22.60m.

Obituary

Athletics Wellington life member Peter Tearle of Masterton passed away on Thursday 20 May 2021, aged 95.

He was a corporal in the British Army during WW2 in India and later migrated from the UK, settling in Masterton where he joined the Masterton Harrier Club. He subsequently competed for Wellington Scottish.

Tearle was a longstanding cross country and road official, and a pole vault official in the summer.

He competed in masters athletics, winning the New Zealand M60 3000m track and 10km road walk titles during the 1980’s, and the M65 titles in 1992. He was a pole vault official at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games and was made a life member of Wellington Scottish Club in 1991, followed by life membership of Athletics Wellington.
