Athletics New Zealand Combined Events Championships, Cooks Gardens – 25/26 February 2023
Christina Ryan chalked up her sixth straight senior women’s heptathlon title with a total of 5387, her best at a national championship and a 105 points improvement on her previous best at the Oceania Championships in Mackay last June. She had personal bests in the 100m hurdles, javelin and 800m. Maddie Wilson collected the silver for the second year.

Max Attwell took out his fifth national decathlon title with a score of 7564 points. He had a personal best 400m of 47.93 and a javelin PB of 52.01m. Angus Lyver retained his U20 title with a PB score of 6595 and PB’s in the high jump, 400m and javelin. Maggie Jones also defended her under 20 women’s title with a score of 4071.

Obituary

Paralympics stalwart James Savage MBE of Kawerau died on 20 February 2023 aged 86.

Paralympian #14 Jim was a member of New Zealand’s very first Paralympic Games Team competing at the Tel Aviv 1968 Paralympic Games. He went onto represent New Zealand again at three following Paralympic Games in Para archery, Para athletics and Para table tennis. He won two bronze medals in shot put in 1972 and 1976. He was the first life member of Parafed Bay of Plenty and founded the Kawerau Paraplegic Association and the Friendly Games. Jim was awarded a Paralympics New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001 for his outstanding services to Paralympic sport. In the 1977 New Year Honours he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to paraplegics and sport. He was diagnosed with polio in his early 20s and started wheelchair sport in 1966.
